Gaza's Children in Crisis
A humanitarian emergency unfolding before our eyes in 2025
In 2025, the children of Gaza are enduring one of the most severe humanitarian crises in recent history. Ongoing conflict, widespread displacement, and a collapsing healthcare system have created dire conditions for the youngest and most vulnerable. This article outlines the critical challenges they face, supported by recent data and reports.
Alarming Child Mortality Rates
Since October 2023, over 17,000 Palestinian children have been killed in Gaza due to military actions. In the first week of 2025 alone, at least 74 children were reportedly killed in Gaza. The United Nations has documented a record 32,990 grave violations against children in conflict zones, including Gaza.

Mass Displacement and Inadequate Shelter
As of November 2023, more than 700,000 children in Gaza were displaced. By December 2023, approximately 893,000 children were internally displaced, with many forced to evacuate multiple times. Displaced families often lack adequate shelter, exposing children to harsh weather conditions and increasing health risks.

Escalating Malnutrition and Hunger
Critical Malnutrition Statistics
- Over 65,000 cases of acute malnutrition reported among children (April 2025)
- 3,000 children at risk of death from starvation (UNICEF warning)
- 8,000 children diagnosed with malnutrition (WHO report)
- Severe food insecurity affecting 9 out of 10 families
In April 2025, over 65,000 cases of acute malnutrition were reported among children in Gaza. UNICEF has warned that 3,000 children are at risk of death from starvation. The World Health Organization reported 8,000 children diagnosed with malnutrition in Gaza.
Collapsing Healthcare Infrastructure
Kamal Adwan Hospital, the only pediatric facility in northern Gaza, ceased operations following a raid in late 2024. The destruction of medical facilities has left children without access to essential healthcare services. Outbreaks of diseases such as cholera and measles are exacerbating the health crisis among children.

Psychological Trauma and Mental Health
Continuous exposure to violence and displacement has led to severe psychological trauma among Gaza's children. Many children exhibit symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and depression. Access to mental health services is severely limited due to the ongoing conflict and resource constraints.
